Since the 2016 Global Strategy the European Union pursues a comprehensive security policy, with a special focus on the Indo-Pacific as reflected in policy papers, like the EU’s Indo-Pacific Strategy, the Global Gateway, the Strategic Compass and the recently proposed European Economic Security Strategy. The latter got traction as lesson learned from the COVID-19 crisis and in light of the US-China great power competition. Maintaining the focus on the Indo-Pacific while facing the war of aggression in the Ukraine, the war in Gaza, the threats to security posed by climate change and the need to stabilize the international system in cooperation with the ‘Global South’ are challenges for the EU to overcome while carving out a policy which stays in line with a principled foreign policy, serves EU interests and is implemented in cooperation with strategic partners, like Japan.
