Title of Presentation

The Evolution of ESG Investment -Criticism, Ambiguity and Impact-

Abstract

The concept of ESG (Environment, Social, and Corporate Governance) investments was promoted by the United Nations-supported organization, the Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI). It has spread to the global financial industry and private companies, aiming to incorporate environmental, social, and governance perspectives into investment decision-making processes. ESG investment has become popular especially since the UN General Assembly adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015. However, in the United States recently, there are growing anti-ESG movements. Republican state lawmakers and members of Congress are attempting to block corporate efforts at climate-related financial risk management and hinder the growth of ESG investment. Why is there such conflict regarding ESG investment and what does it mean to global governance? This presentation will illustrate the background of the rise of ESG investments and its growing critics.
