Abstract

Disease does not just strike individuals, it can also affect the community as many plans are postponed or canceled. The covid-19 pandemic provides ample examples ranging from deeply personal events such as solitary graduation ceremonies to mass happenings such as the unprecedented postponement of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
However, when illness halts long-awaited plans, it also creates opportunities for new initiatives to emerge. This talk presents one such case, the Festival of the Ages, one of K yoto’s̶and Japan’s̶foremost matsuri. By tracing its creation process, I will show that had it not been for Emperor Meiji’s illness in the spring of 1895, the festival may never have seen the light of day. Moreover, I will also suggest that a devastating cholera epidemic may ultimately have contributed to the festival’s popularity after a long summer during which many other events had been prohibited.
