Abstract
Medically unexplained symptoms refer to a variety of complaints for which no abnormalities can be identified despite thorough medical examinations. Such symptoms can be frustrating for both patients and physicians. Patients who have suffered from these symptoms for many years often ask, “Why can't the cause be identified?” or “Why can't I be cured?”
In Western medicine, treatment generally depends on identifying the underlying cause of a disease. Kampo medicine, however, approaches patients from a different perspective. Even when the cause cannot be explained by Western medical standards, Kampo practitioners evaluate the patient's condition based on a diagnostic pattern, known as a sho (pattern), which reflects the constellation of symptoms and signs presented by the individual. This unique approach allows for treatment aimed not only at symptom relief but also at addressing the underlying imbalance, and in some cases can overcome therapeutic limitations encountered in Western medicine.
In this lecture, I will introduce the Kampo medical perspective on medically unexplained symptoms and discuss practical treatment strategies based on Kampo medicine.
