Abstract

The forests are dotted throughout the rural area, which have been used and maintained by local residents as foraging places for plants and other resources. On the other hand, in Japan, foraging activities have declined since the 1950s through lifestyle changes and subsequent rapid economic growth, and this type of vegetation is disappearing. However, foraging is an activity that we have practiced since ancient times, and it is an important way to experience the joy of obtaining nature's resource and feeling the changing of the seasons. In this talk, I call the vegetation as "forests for foraing," and report on local efforts and issues related to these forests. I will also examine the future of foraging activities and its forests in Japan.
