Demonstration of a DX Model for Continuum of Maternal and Child Healthcare Using the Portable Health Clinic

The project “Demonstration of a DX Model for Continuum of Maternal and Child Healthcare Using the Portable Health Clinic,” undertaken by the Portable Health Clinic (PHC) Module of Q-AOS, led by Professor Kikuchi and colleagues, has been selected for the JICA Co-Creation and Innovation Program “QUEST” 2026.

In Pakistan, geographical distance to healthcare facilities poses a major challenge for pregnant women living in rural and mountainous areas. In addition, social and cultural constraints related to pregnant women's mobility and access to healthcare facilities can make it difficult for them to seek medical care when needed.

Against this background, ensuring access to a continuum of maternal and child healthcare—from pregnancy through the postpartum period—remains a significant challenge. Even when pregnant women are at risk of complications, they may not receive timely treatment or be referred to higher-level healthcare facilities, and consequently may not receive adequate support for a safe delivery.

This project will demonstrate a model for supporting the continuum of maternal and child healthcare through the PHC, an ICT-enabled telehealth system for maternal and child health, in Basic Health Units (BHUs) and surrounding communities in Pakistan.

Through this project, the team aims to demonstrate a model of maternal and child healthcare that leverages ICT and local human resources, thereby contributing to improved health outcomes for pregnant women, mothers, and children in Pakistan.
