Abstract
Accessibility is often framed as a technical problem, but it is shaped by people, cultures, and everyday contexts. In this talk, I will explore how design can move beyond functionality to better reflect lived experiences. Drawing on research in healthcare, prosthetics, and service design, we will examine how users interact with devices and technologies in real life, and how social and cultural factors influence whether solutions are adopted or abandoned. Through examples from different countries, we will understand how to identify barriers that are not purely physical, including stigma, usability challenges, and gaps in infrastructure. We will also look into co-design and participatory approaches as ways to involve users directly in shaping solutions. By focusing on how people interact with devices and technology in their own environments, this talk considers how accessibility can be understood as a shared, evolving process, translating scientific findings into impactful solutions.
