Abstract
Deforestation and forest degradation in tropics are recognized as critical global environmental issues. In this seminar, I will introduce the interdisciplinary, multi-scale research that our laboratory has been conducting. To efficiently capture changes in vast forested areas, we have utilized remote sensing technologies such as satellites, aircraft, and drones. However, there is much that cannot be understood through aerial observation alone. Thus, we have ventured deep into the jungle to observe the life and death of trees over several decades. We have also conducted face-to-face interviews to better understand how local communities use forests and perceive conservation. In this seminar, we will share the insights gained through these approaches, as well as the challenges we aim to address in future research.
