Abstract
Our two neighboring countries, ROK and Japan, marks the 60th Anniversary of “normalization” of the bilateral diplomatic ties this year. The two key democracies, bound by geographic proximity, yet estranged by the past, have undergone times of turbulence since then, and evolved into key partners over the decades.
It is high time to take stock of the past developments and to build a resilient partnership, as guardian of democracies, to promote peace and prosperity in the region and beyond.
Amid fluctuating international order, facing increasing challenges at home and abroad, it is all the more compelling that the two key partners should “hold both hands” to open up a chapter of a forward-looking, future-oriented relations for the peoples of not only both countries, but also the whole world, as the slogan of 60th Anniversary goes.
This special seminar provides a great opportunity to look back on the footprints of the past 60 years, focusing on how to build a robust partnership of both countries, while keeping the reconciliation efforts among European neighboring countries in sight, particularly between Germany and France, as the speaker abounds in practical background as a career diplomat in Europe for long years.
