Abstract

This course will explore the evolution of stone walls, a distinctive component of Japanese castles, and consider future challenges from the perspective of cultural heritage preservation, preserving traditional techniques, using the example of the reconstruction of Kumamoto Castle after the earthquake. Oda Nobunaga's construction of Azuchi Castle served as a catalyst for spreading advanced castle-building techniques from the Kinki region to other regions. Toyotomi Hideyoshi adopted cutting-edge stone wall construction techniques for Hizen Nagoya Castle, setting the tone for future developments in castle engineering. Kumamoto Castle was built during this process, but many of its stone walls collapsed in the 2016 earthquake. While faithful reproduction of the original construction techniques is required for restoration, the introduction of modern reinforcement methods is being considered due to tourism demands, and debate continues over the principles of historical heritage preservation.
