Abstract
Aquaculture is a major global industry, with Japan producing 4.2 million tons of fish in 2018 ̶38% of which came from aquaculture. However, infectious diseases pose a serious threat to sustainable fish farming. Current treatments rely heavily on antibiotics, which can lead to antibiotic resistance and environmental concerns. Preventive strategies are therefore crucial for long-term sustainability. Our lab focuses on developing oral vaccines for fish using silk as a biocompatible carrier. We also investigate how specific immune molecules can be utilised to enhance vaccine effectiveness. In parallel, we are designing specialized aquarium filters made from silk to reduce pathogens in water systems. This seminar will highlight our research on these innovative preventive approaches̶oral vaccines and silk-based filters ̶to improve fish health and reduce reliance on antibiotics in aquaculture.
