Abstract
Personal data fuels the modern economy. Every social action—online or offline—generates data that companies constantly collect and monetize, often without our awareness. This information is used to profile, manipulate, and exclude people without meaningful transparency or consent.

Privacy laws like the EU’s GDPR or California’s CCPA and CPRA fall short—enforcement is weak, consent is performative, and the system remains impossibly complex. The fundamental problem: current laws treat data as corporate assets rather than something individuals should own and control.

This talk considers a human-centric alternative, where individuals have genuine ownership over their personal data and can make meaningful decisions about how it's used. AI technologies can support this vision, but only when guided by robust regulation that prioritizes human dignity and autonomy over corporate interests, notably the interests of big technology firms.
