Abstract
Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is estimated to infect approximately half of the global population. This bacterium is able to survive in the highly acidic environment of the stomach, contributing to the development of serious diseases such as atrophic gastritis, duodenal ulcers, and even stomach cancer. However, in reality, the majority of infected individuals remain asymptomatic or only suffer minor symptoms for the rest of their lives, whereas only a few percent develop gastric cancer. In this seminar, I will present recent findings from the genome analysis of H. pylori. Topics will include factors that increase the risk of stomach cancer, why this risk is higher in Asia, and how the stomach environment changes with H. pylori infection. Additionally, I'll introduce our initiatives in Bhutan, which focus on implementing community-wide H. pylori testing and early stomach cancer diagnosis.
