Abstract
Our body is composed of cells, which spontaneously assemble into complex systems. Like living organisms, self-organizing systems possess design capabilities that far surpass human technology. If we can design the fundamental materials that enable such systems, they have the potential to serve a wide range of applications in the future society. In this seminar, we focus on the “cytoskeleton,” present in every living cell, which acts as the “designer” of cellar shape and movement. Developing the method to deterministically control the cytoskeleton opens new possibilities for designing cell-like fundamental materials at the molecular level and constructing systems based on self-organization. This seminar presents the latest advances in controlling cytoskeletal self-organization and discuss their applications in artificial cells.
