Abstract
From everyday items such as umbrellas and folding fans to solar panels for artificial satellites, the technology of folding large structures into small sizes is essential for various applications and scales. Insects have been addressing the same problem for over 300 million years since they acquired wings, each species finding its own unique solutions. These foldable wings are the ultimate in deployable structures, capable of withstanding flapping at tens of times per second while possessing the strength and rigidity needed to fold and unfold instantly. By learning from these mechanisms, it is expected that innovative industrial products can be designed. In this lecture, I will explain the geometry and design methods of the wing folding observed in beetles and earwigs, and introduce new deployable structures designed based on these principles.
