Abstract
Global warming is enhancing high air temperature (HAT) in summer, which is a growing challenge for all living organisms. HAT causes heat stress that can jeopardize health, economics, and survival. We are using chickens as a model animal for heat stress research because chickens do not have sweat glands, which is resemble to young kids whose sweat glands are undeveloped and aged people whose sweat glands are less active. In our lab study, we have found that some blood amino acids and brain hormones are changed in chickens when they are exposed to HAT. Subsequently, we have discovered the thermotolerance and anti-stress roles of those amino acids and brain hormones. This seminar will provide an opportunity to share those findings to face the global challenge of HAT-induced heat stress. Our findings may be important for understanding the connection between physiology and nutrition during stress, which has far-reaching implications in a multitude of species and biological contexts.
