Abstract
The management and conservation of forests, the largest biomass on land, is an important area for combating climate change. With 70% of Japan's land area covered by forests, the forestry sector is challenged to maintain and improve the multiple functions expected of forests while using forest resources in a sustainable manner. The number of forestry workers has been declining and the population is ageing, but in recent years attention has been drawn to young people moving to rural and mountain villages and starting forestry businesses. What kind of young people are attracted to forests and forestry? Are there movements that could lead to a new relationship between forests and people? In this presentation I would like to present a survey of young people who have entered forestry and consider the possibilities for a new relationship between people and forests and forestry.
