While mitigating emissions of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2) is essential to combating global warming, capturing and reducing CO2 that has already been emitted into the atmosphere is also critical. The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has set a goal of limiting the global average temperature increase to 1.5°C or less, but achieving this goal depends on capturing CO2 that has already been emitted. Such technologies that capture CO2 directly from the atmosphere are called Negative Emission Technologies (NETs), and this seminar will provide a detailed introduction to NETs underway around the world and explore how these technologies can contribute to building a new society.
