Abstract
Recently, the deer population has been increasing in Japan. Generally, there is understory vegetation in forest ecosystems, which protects soil from erosion. However, deer eat leaves, branches, bark, etc. in understory and understory vegetation has disappeared in many places in Japan. In the mountainous regions of southern Kyushu, the ground was originally covered with dwarf bamboo. However, since the 1980s, the number of deer has been increased and the dwarf bamboo has disappeared. Near the mountaintop, where large beech trees that are over 200 years old were growing, severe soil erosion is occurring, roots are exposed, and an increasing number of beech trees are dying. Therefore, we investigated how the loss of the dwarf bamboo affects the soil ecosystem and the growth of beech trees. As a result, it was revealed that due to the soil erosion, decrease in symbiotic fungi that needed attention for tree growth, increase in pathogenic bacteria, and that the exposed roots accelerated the decline of the beech trees. In the seminar, I will talk about the obtained results.
