Abstract
Learning a foreign language can be likened to an iceberg, like the one that sunk the Titanic. Misunderstandings and conflicts can occur, even if we understand the usage of words and grammar. That’s because our thought patterns, values, etc., which influence language, lie underneath the surface and therefore are often unconscious. Such things are invisible. Sometimes they cannot be expressed in language at all. Such knowledge is called tacit knowledge. This lecture will illustrate the problems commonly encountered when learning a foreign language by contrasting examples from Japanese, English, and Chinese. We will also discuss the relationship between language and culture, and the difficulties in communication/language acquisition due to cultural differences.
