Kyushu University Forum "KYUDAI NOW" in Taiwan

Event Report

 On Saturday, December 20, 2025, the Kyushu University Forum “KYUDAI NOW in Taiwan” was held at the Howard Civil Service International House in Taipei, Taiwan. The forum aims to share Kyushu University’s latest research achievements with local and regional communities, promote academic exchange, strengthen ties with alumni, and foster international human networks. This event marked the first “KYUDAI NOW” forum ever held in Taiwan, bringing together approximately 100 participants from Taiwan and Japan, including alumni, students, researchers, and representatives from industry and government.

 The opening session began with a welcome address by Prof. Akira Harada, Vice Director of the Kyushu University Institute for Asian and Oceanian Studies (Q-AOS). This was followed by guest remarks from Dr. Kazuyuki Katayama, Chief Representative of the Japan–Taiwan Exchange Association Taipei Office, Prof. Yi-De Liu, Vice President of National Taiwan Normal University, and Prof. Jiun-Haw Lee, Associate Vice President of National Taiwan University.
 Subsequently, Prof. Kimiyo Kikuchi introduced Kyushu University and Q-AOS, providing participants with an overview of the forum’s objectives and the university’s international research and educational initiatives.

Symposium session


Q&A session with Kyushu University students studying in Taiwan
 In the first part of the symposium, research presentations were delivered in the fields of healthcare, environment, and economics. Assoc. Prof. Kohei Nakata presented on the status and future prospects of pancreatic cancer treatment. Prof. Tomonori Kume discussed challenges related to the degradation of forest ecosystem services. Prof. Masayuki Takada introduced acoustic and non-acoustic approaches to urban noise problems. Prof. Tsung-Ming Yeh reported on financial literacy and the outcomes of financial education.
 Each presentation was followed by an active question-and-answer session, fostering lively discussion with participants.

Poster presentations by Kyushu University

 During the break, poster presentations were given by Kyushu University graduate students Kohei Yamashita, Kosuke Nagai, and Kohei Torii. They explained their research directly to participants, who raised numerous questions. The session provided valuable opportunities for interaction across generations and academic disciplines.

 The second part of the symposium focused on mathematics, data science, and information technology. Prof. Kenji Ono spoke on the potential of artificial intelligence to discover natural laws. Prof. Hiromi Yuasa addressed challenges facing electronics in the age of information explosion. Prof. Kenji Kajiwara discussed developments in industrial mathematics and the possibilities for international collaboration. These presentations prompted discussions on the social application of research and future international cooperation.
 At the conclusion of the forum, closing remarks were delivered by Prof. Gi-Shih Lien, President of the Kyushu University Taiwan Alumni Association, and Prof. Shuji Shimizu, Vice President of Kyushu University. The forum concluded successfully with strong engagement from participants.
 At the subsequent reception, a guest address was given by Prof. Cheng-Chih Wu, President of National Taiwan Normal University. Participants exchanged views directly, making the event an important opportunity to deepen future academic exchange and human networks between Kyushu University and Taiwan.
