Sustainable Developmet of Histrical Cities in Asia
Module Mission/Vision

In the historic cities of Asia, the preservation and use of the so-called capital buildings of government is progressing, and these former colonial cities are developing their cities around the architecture built by their suzerain states, giving them a Little London or Little Paris-like landscape wherever they go. Behind the scenes, vernacular architecture such as houses and shops, the vessels of people's lives, are in danger of being swallowed up by the wave of development and disappearing. These vernacular buildings are potentially important in fostering pride in indigenous traditions and culture, and in order to truly break free from the spell of colonialism, urban development should be based around these vernacular buildings. Therefore, this module will focus on vernacular architecture built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, explore ways to preserve it as an urban heritage, and build a new methodology for urban development based on it.
