Copper is an important material for producing clean energy in the future. Flotation, as one of the methods for copper production, can contribute to clean copper production by minimizing the contaminants and by improving the process efficiency. In this study, seawater was used to replace the freshwater in the flotation process, saving the freshwater resources for other's use and also reducing the CO2 emission from the desalination plant. In addition, an oxidation method was developed to replacing a toxic and harmful NaHS method. Therefore, the flotation can be safer, thus improves the health of the employee.

Next steps for implementation

Your proposed method seems to be great: replacing freshwater, reducing CO2 emission, replacing toxic methods. So what are the next steps to actually implement it and replace the conventional methods?

Thank you for your question Dr. Ueda. Currently, we are trying to scale-up this process from laboratory to pilot plant scale in collaboration with Sumitomo Metal Mining. Co., Ltd. The pilot plant tests showed promising results for seawater treatment and H2O2 treatment. However, further improvement and tests are required to adopt the more complex copper ores. If we can succeed in this pilot plant test scale, there is possibility to apply this treatment in the real scale of flotation plant and contribute to safer and more environmental friendly flotation process. Thank you.

Improvement challenges
コメント
Hello, Mr. Pandhe. Thank you for your impressive presentation. My background is not mineral processing, but I am interested in your six sustainable development goals. To improve the copper processing using flotation for safe and sustainable copper production, are there any challenges? If there are, what steps will you take to face or minimize them? Thank you.

Implementation for other ores
コメント
Dear Dr. Pandhe. Thank you very much for the nice poester presentation. I myself am not familiar with floatation but I want to ask if this technology can be implemented to other kinds of ore? Or only to to this specific one? Thank you very much.

Thank You Mita-san for your question. "To improve the copper processing using flotation for safe and sustainable copper production, are there any challenges? If there are, what steps will you take to face or minimize them?" Yes, there are many challenges for safe and sustainable copper production. Several of them are addressed in my poster (i.e., fresh water-intensive process, CO2 emission from copper processing, and the usage of toxic chemical reagent). Another challenge is processing naturally toxic copper minerals (i.e., copper minerals containing arsenic). There are also other challenges related to the characteristic of copper ores. Currently, we try various non-toxic chemicals and many other methods for separating valuable minerals. We also tried to up-scaling our research results on a pilot scale to test the reliability of our research results before finally applying it on the industrial scale.

Dear Hendrik-san, Thank you for your question. "I want to ask if this technology can be implemented to other kinds of ore? Or only to this specific one?" Flotation is a process that highly depends on the characteristic of the copper ores (i.e., type and the composition of valuable and nonvaluable minerals). The methods presented in this poster can be used for processing copper-molybdenum ore. However, it might need further investigation and optimization if we want to process other minerals ore using the same methods.

Other options beside seawater
コメント
Dear Dr. Pandhe. Your research is really interesting. I am wondering if there are other promising resources of natural copper depressants beside seawater? Thank you very much for your great poster.
