Event

The international online symposium “Beyond the Southern Barbarians: Repositioning Japan in the First Global Age” was organized and conduced as cooperation between Kyushu University’s Faculty of Humanities, International MA Program in the Humanities (IMAP) and Yale University’s Council on East Asian Studies. Additional funding was provided by Kyushu University’s Institute for Asian and Oceanian Studies. Endorsement and logistical support came from Kyushu University’s Commons Program and the Japanese Association of Art History. The symposium took place on five event days: February 6 (Sat), 9 (Tue), 11 (Thu), 16 (Tue), and 18 (Thu), 2021. After a greeting by Professor Shimizu Kazuhiro, the dean of the Faculty of Humanities, Professors Anton Schweizer (Kyudai) and Mimi Yiengpruksawan (Yale) delivered introductory remarks, followed by the keynote speech by Professor Yukio Lippit (Harvard University). The following five panels assembled specialists of various fields inclusing history, art history, literature, religion, intellectual history, astronomy, map making, and military technology. The panel discussions were lively. The symposium was originally planned as a real live event but had to be postponed and converted into an online symposium because of COVID 19.
