The Security and Disaster Cluster of the Institute for Asian and Oceanian Studies held a online symposium/workshop "Thinking about the Future: Cultural Diversity and Social Inclusion" on Thursday, October 21, during Kyushu University Asia Week 2021.
Under this globalization, the increase in the number of transnational immigrants and foreign workers has raised various issues concerning the lives of and discrimination against foreign residents in host societies, as well as prompted discussions on social inclusion and coexistence for people with diverse backgrounds. In particular, pandemic of Covid-19 has created a "wall" that restricts human traffic beyond the borders. And by setting up a "social distance" between us and others has fundamentally changed not only our lifestyles, but also the culture and art in society, as well as the relationships among human beings. Furthermore, the exclusion of people of certain races, ethnicities, and jobs has also become apparent in this pandemic of Covid-19.Therefore, in this project, we aimed to discuss how to overcome the various "wall" in this world and how to create a society where people from different backgrounds can live together, from the perspective of cultural policies and practices in Asian cities.
The first part of the symposium, "Cultural Policy and Cities for Foreign Residents: A Comparison of Cases in Japan and Other Asian Countries," consisted of reports and questions raised by researchers engaged in research on cultural policy in the field of Asia, and comments and discussion by Dr. Kornatowski Geerhardt(Faculty of Social and Cultural Studies).
In the second part of the workshop is titled "Arts in the Context of Multiculturalism: How to Feel, Express, and Transcend Cultural Gap". We invited theater professionals and local government officials in charge of cultural policy who are engaged in various practices related to foreign residents. They reported about their practices and considerations.
Although the event lasted for a long time, many participants, not only researchers but also practitioners involved in cultural activities, joined both the first and second parts and discussed each other actively. We exchanged meaningful opinions on multicultural society and culture through this event.
